The area around the town of Goma in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) and Rwanda is a volcanic plateau and over one weekend in July 1994 one million people arrived here. The genocidalists had been defeated and they, hidden among the civilian population, fled across the border to escape the expected reprisals.
