LAGOON CLEARANCE Before
> In Ampara District GOAL cleared lagoons that were
damaged and destroyed by the tsunami. These are images made just after
work was started to clear them in February 2005. Using labour and machinery
hired locally on cash for work schemes the task of clearing the rubble
and lagoon injected much needed money into the local economy in a time
of great need.
After
> These are photographs made after the work was completed
in May 2005. The embankment along the lagoon sides was reinforced using
rubble cleared from the tsunami affected zone.
WELL CLEARANCE
GOAL is also providing clean water to the affected communities along
the coast. To date GOAL has cleared and desalinated over 2,200 wells
in Ampara District. Wells that were contaminated by flood waters and
debris, rendering them unusable, have been cleaned and rebuilt using
contracted labour hired locally.
DYKE or BUND REBUILDING
The dyke or bund has been rebuilt using debris from houses destroyed
in the tsunami. This has allowed farmers to replant rice paddies and
provides the population with an alternative escape route, from a town
surrounded by water, in the event of another emergency.
