Water & Sanitation > Lagoon Clearance

BEFORE
AFTER

May 2005 - Conor Fyans, an engineer from Dublin, Ireland, surveys the repairs to the lagoons carried out by GOAL in Ampara District. The work took three months to complete. Rubble clearance projects that were initiated to clear the debris from destroyed homes provided a ready supply of infill to reconstruct lagoon banks and roads and even to rebuild a dyke. Three months into the work GOAL's efforts have been rewarded with an obviously revitalised and healthy waterway. The enviornment for people living along the banks of the lagoons has been greatly improved with the removal of the debris and with fresh water replacing the stagnant pools.
